Our first photo on the mountain roundup this week is not a surprise, as we’ve actually had this one in our roundup before..when Steven Freedman first posted this, it immediately shot into top posts, and the second time around was exactly the same. We are so pleased to be able to share this one again.

Mingo Falls holds a special place in the NC Culture heart, as we have done a past post on this, on a trip to visit Cherokee, NC. Unfortunately, our website was hacked, and the Mingo Falls post was one of the ones we were unable to recover. A very special thanks to Landscapes of the Blue Ridge for reminding us of the awe and beauty of this place.
Mingo is located in the Qualla Indian Reservation.

St Matthews Church in Todd, NC
“Time to move on from Banner Elk for a quick trip to Todd, NC. I went just to take a photograph of St. Matthew’s church and do a little more exploring. The next time I am up in the area I plan to do a little more research on this beautiful country church. About all I could find out is it was an Episcopal church at one time and perhaps is an active church of another denomination nowaday…s, or was at one point.
Episcopal and Lutheran churches (other denominations also) often have red doors. I thought I knew the meaning until I googled it, here are three explanations:
-“The red door tradition originated during the Middle Ages in England when it was a sign of sanctuary”
-“The color is associated with the Holy Spirit”
-“‘Red is the color of the Passion””
