Our first nursery is Red Root Nursery, located in Barnardsville

redrootnatives@gmail.com 828-545-0565

Although this nursery primarily sells to larger outfits, you can place individual orders if the total is $45 or more.

Some plants you might find include ramps, ginseng, foam flower and even Black Cohosh..They also stock one of our favorites for butterflies, Butterfly Weed! Please be sure to scroll down the list available at above link to see some popular choices.

“Our small propagation nursery has relocated to Big Ivy in northern Buncombe County, NC next to the Pisgah National Forest. We specialize in propagating native shrubs and perennials of the southern Appalachian woodlands. Our stock is primarily seed propagated, on occasion propagated from rooted cuttings or division of rhizomes, and never collected from the wild. We are proficient at seed collecting, seed cleaning, and following various germination protocols. Seed is either collected on our own property or purchased from seed companies.

Native plants in western North Carolina have medicinal, ornamental, or edible value. The use of herbal medicines, landscaping with native plants (going “green”), and consuming exotic woodland fare is gaining popularity, which has placed many species at risk of being over- harvested from native woodlands. As a result, many native plant species are becoming more difficult to find and are designated “at-risk” by the United Plant Savers organization.

We offer many of the species in demand that are challenging to propagate from seed, as they have strict seed collection or germination requirements. Our transplants, or “liners”, can be grown to maturity more quickly, saving a year or more in production time, and reducing the chance of losses due to germination failure.

We practice organic production and pest management methods.

We sell wholesale to nurseries, botanical gardens, garden centers, commercial herb growers, forest farmers and individuals with a limited amount of retail at herb festivals and native plant conferences. Wholesale pricing is available with a minimum purchase of $45.”

Our next nursery is a Siler City based nursery, Growing Wild.

One plant I was pleased to see listed on their inventory is Ironweed, as I have been admiring this striking plant for two years now at my co-op pollinator garden. This is a tolerant plant of most conditions, and benefits bees, butterflies and birds. The strong stem on this plant keeps it upright when others may be beaten down by weather, too.

Other plants featured at Growing Wild include, but are not limited to:

Ladies Tresses

a variety of pitcher plants

Coral Honeysuckle

Seashore Mallow

Mountain Mint

Joe Pye Weed

Beautyberry

and many more!

You can contact this nursery by phone, but please note: you cannot order by phone

919-200-2677

You can visit the nursery, but plants need to be ordered online

1455 Arthur Teague Rd.

Siler City, NC 27344

on facebook.

I am also honored to be able to mention a nursery that is run by a man who we also enjoy from his photography! Yes, I am talking about Gary Hollar Photography, located in New Bern. How many of you knew that Gary also runs a native plant nursery?  Welcome to Gary’s Nursery!

This nursery specializes in palmettos, and check this out:

The most widely distributed native palm in the continental United States. It is native to NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, TX, OK and AR. This small palm was the first palm in the United States to be botanically named and described. The common name is Dwarf palmetto.

Sabal minor (Dwarf Palmetto) is native to most of the NC counties adjacent to the coast and several counties inland from the central coastal plain and south.. It is a very cold hardy bush type palm growing beside creeks and rivers here in eastern NC . The most common size found in habitat here is around four to six feet with no visible trunk, however we have found specimens up to ten feet or so in height with small one to two foot trunks in Hyde, Brunswick, Beaufort, Pamlico, Carteret and Currituck Counties.

In recent years Sabal Minor has emerged as a desirable landscape specimen. They are planted as singles or in groups in wet, shady areas where many other plants would not thrive. Minors can also be planted in full sun in wet or dry soil and they make a wonderful under-story plant.”
