As with any serious weather event, there always has to be a little humor to off-balance things..in Arthur’s case, we enjoyed the photo of “Hurricane Arthur’s Clean Up Crew” so much that we wanted to include it here. Ivy is a service dog for a friend on the Outer Banks, and has her own Facebook page: Through Ivy’s “Eye: A Guide Dogs Story.
Severe Weather Eastern NC on Facebook:
NC Culture has so much respect for this page..we have watched them grow from a small quiet page to a major force, no doubt due to the consistent accuracy and up to the minute information that they share, and we keep a close eye on their page when storms threaten this part of our state. For Hurricane Arthur, they were there every step of the way, updating as fast as possible. I am honestly not sure we could have given the coverage we did without the input from their page. I sent them a query about Arthur to confirm some info, and rec’d this back:
“Hurricane Arthur made landfall on Shackleford Banks between Beaufort and Harkers Island as a cat 2 hurricane with winds of 100mph. It was the earliest landfalling hurricane in North Carolina history has of 1860s.”
Severe Weather also sent us a link from NWS that confirmed the following:
landfall was at 11:15 PM
Top wind gust was 101 mph.
Storm surge flooding was 4-5′ above normal with Arthur.

Arthur’s Eye Wall
This particular video was published by a friend of mine, Paula, of O’Malley Photography on Facebook. Paula was in the middle of moving when Arthur took aim at our coast, and ended up riding out the storm in the cab of her truck, not knowing that landfall was going to be right in her area. Another friend, Lori Chappell of Insights, Images and Poetry on Facebook, was on the phone with her thru the night, texting her photos from the TV to show her as the bands came ashore. You can hear, or not hear, I should say, how quiet it became as the eye passed over. Paula also has several other videos on YouTube of her experience.
