Since this will be our last issue until the holidays are over, we wanted to share a taste of what our first post for 2014 will be…a special post on Roanoke River Partners. Linking five counties in NC, and traversing over 200 miles of river, from Virginia all the way to the Albemarle Sound, RRPs seeks to showcase the rivers and diversity of the region, and has developed paddle trails for exploring both the Roanoke and the Cashie Rivers. The Roanoke River has historically been a resource for transporting goods in this area, as well as a source of food and also, at one time, providing cover for escapees of slavery. Many may not be aware that the Cashie is also home to one of our three inland cable ferries: The Sans Souci. The below photo is compliments of Chloe’s Blog, who writes extensively on the area. If you are planning a trip to the area, along with checking out the RRP website, Chloe’s can also be a great asset.

One unique feature of the Roanoke River Partner’s trails is the addition of “camping” platforms…where you can pull your kayak or canoe right up to your chosen spot for an evening of campfires, stargazing, and regrouping for the next day. The charge for the platforms is nominal ($25 a night for 2 people)

In 2007, Roanoke River Partners acquired a historical building that is eventually destined to be a visitor’s center, the Hamilton Rosenwald School, circa 1919. The goal is to have this center up and running in 2019, a 100th anniversary.
