Elk Falls, NC

Located in Avery County, this beautiful waterfall is a fifty foot drop.  Please note: there have been several accidents with people jumping from the top of the falls.  It is very easy to misjudge.  The swimming area below is a popular spot, and you can read more from NC Waterfalls.  Elk Falls is often referred to as “Big Falls”.

Also, the Family Wilderness Campground is CLOSED until further notice.

Mountain Laurel

“Commons”

Also known as Calico Bush, Spoonwood, or even Ivybush, our mountain laurel is actually the state flower for both Connecticut and Pennsylvania.  Predominate in the mountains of NC, it can also be found in the piedmont region.  The Cherokees often used a tea of the leaves as a painkiller, but please note, this plant is considered toxic for ingestion by many.

Price Lake

Price Lake is located near Julian Price Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway, near milepost 297  and Blowing Rock.

Campground phone number:

.(828)963-5911

Alerts: Due to invasive insects that are decimating the forestry, Price Lake does not allow outside wood for campfires, etc.  Only local firewood is allowed.  Forestry in this area consists of hemlock, white pine, oak, hickory and birch trees.

Plants can include laurel, soloman’s seal, and mayapple.  One interesting fungi can be found here: the jack-o’-lantern mushroom (Omphalotus illudens), a mushroom that literally “glows in the dark”.

Wildlife can include beavers, bobcats, otters, and more.

Fishing can be done from non-motorized boats, and canoe rentals are available.  There is also a dock available.
