Don’t come between a North Carolinian and their hamburger…be it with chili and slaw, or smothered with mayo, ketchup, and mustand!
Recently, we shared a link of “best burgers” that an organization had published, and imagine our surprise when it generated this much interest!
So much interest, and so many suggestions that, in fact, I felt we simply had to mention these restaurants, for burger lovers across our state. In no particular order, here is what the NC Culture followers had to say about that delectable item, and who dishes it up the best. Please remember, NC Culture in no way endorses these restaurants, as that is not within our expertise..these are simply responses to the original link, found below, regarding the best burgers in NC. Needless to say, there was some overlap, such as for Tazy’s Burger and Grill in Wilmington (one which your admin is partial to, as my sister in law, Barbara, and her husband, Brad, own this restaurant), but there were also quite a few new suggestions, listed below!
Tazy’s can also be found on Facebook.
1: Bonnie and Clyde’s in Loafers Glory (Bakersville)
2: Bros Sandwich Shack of Avon
41934 NC Hwy 12
“They should check out Bros sandwich shack in Avon. Best burgers ever!!!”
3: Dairy Center of Mount Airy
407 West Lebanon Street
Although I was unable to locate either a weblink or a Facebook page for the Dairy Center, I did find a wonderful write up from Out State Magazine.
“Dairy Center in Mount Airy, NC deserves to be on this list”
4: Char Grill of Raleigh
618 Hillsborough Street
“How could this list not have Char-Grill (Raleigh) on it? Sheesh.”
5: Way to Go Winnies & F&C
unfortunately, the follower who recommended Way to Go Winnie’s and F&C did not specify the town, and the only restaurant that I found that came close was Winnie’s Tavern in Wilmington. Since I am not sure this is the correct one, I am not including details here. However, if anyone is familiar with Way to Go, we’d love to hear from you!
6: Black Jack’s Pub and Grill of West Jefferson
18 North Jefferson Ave
“Need to try Black Jacks in West Jefferson. Best in the world!!!”
We had two recommendations for Merritts, and unfortunately the location was not mentioned. I found two Merritt’s on the web, one in Chapel Hill and one in Wilmington.
“Merritts is really good, too!”
8: 5 Guys in Kill Devil Hills
1203 S Croatan Hwy
Atlantic Coast Café in Waves
25150 Nc Highway 12
Awful Arthur’s of Kill Devil Hills
2106 N Virginia Dare Trail
“Guess you don’t come to Hatteras and the Outer Banks, huh? You forgot 5 Guys in Nags Head and Atlantic Coast Café in Waves…we challenge you! Awful Arthur’s is great, too.”
Admin note: Awful Arthurs will be reopening on March 5th of this year. Although our commentator mentioned Nags Head for the 5 Guys, the only one I was able to locate was actually in Kill Devil Hills (a matter of a few miles).
9: El’s in Morehead City
3706 Arendell Street
Big Oak Drive In in Salter path
“El’s in Morehead City next to Carteret General Hospital…they come to your car to take the order and then deliver it”
“Big Oak Drive In in Salter Path and El’s Drive In in Morehead City are great, also!”
10: Haps Grill in Salisbury
12: Melvin’s in Elizabethtown
133 West Broad Street
Although I was unable to locate either a website or a Facebook page for Melvin’s, I loved the write-up from Nibble Me This, sent in by our commentator for this restaurant.
“BS! Those are Yankee burgers. Best hamburger in NC is at Melvin’s in Elizabethtown.”.
13: Shake Shop of Cherryville
505 W Church Street
Although I could not locate any specific links for the Shake Shop, I did find several very positive reviews: Please see this Google link.
Black’s Grill in Cherryville
1915 Lincolnton Hwy
Vicki’s in Cherryville
119 S Mountain St
” The best burger joints are located in Northwestern Gaston County in a town called Cherryville. Shake Shop, Black’s Grill, and Vicki’s just to name a few”
So time to update those bucket lists, everyone..it’s time to dine!
